Lately I've been encountering many surprises along the walks of my day.

Bows and Arrows: Matt & Mary Emma Hawthorne

Last Saturday I got an invite to check out a show by Matt & Mary Emma Hawthorne hosted at this magnificent new gallery in the middle of lower Greenville Ave, Bows and Arrows. I met Adam who runs the gallery with his wife who. They moved from NYC to try out their luck in Texas and I must say this gallery will be in the spotlight pretty soon. The location is great, the intimate feeling you get when you walk in is so welcoming, and the art featured is very fresh.

The collages made by Mary Emma were intriguing to me. This new series was mainly inspired after a mission trip to Africa in which she incorporated many materials from the mother land which give you a greater perspective of the feelings involved in the pieces.

Matt Hawthorne, a commercial photographer, had a series of prints of iPhone Polaroids. This to me was very cutting edge and creative. To use a device that we carry around everywhere, the cellphone, and use its capability to take pictures with a Polaroid App is pretty f'king genius.

I asked him how he came about this idea and he said "Polaroids became to expensive, 3-4 dollars per picture. So I downloaded the app and since I carry my phone everywhere, it makes it easier and more productive to take pictures with it."

Show runs thru the 23rd of next month.

Early Saturday a precious friend, Yesenia, came over to let me paint her portrait on a new style I'm working on. Her end of the deal was....I had to cook her a meal. Some of you might not know I have amazing cooking skills, I just don't like to show off.

I baked some Tilapia with my famous avocado sauce and some veggies. "It was gooooood!" that's what she said.

Got down to business after that lunch, but there were other business keeping me from painting. Like my friend Chris needing help moving his bed, and yes...I am the friend with the truck. Haha. Either way Yesenia is beautiful and I got the painting started. Did I mention she has purple in her hair...?

Since the cold weather and politics keeps us from playing soccer tonight. I think much of my interest will be in getting my blog up and running again. An awakening moment happened last week where I realized that I needed to re-invent myself and put focus into important things. (Yeah I had that much time to think since I quit my job almost a month ago).

Some of my goals for the blog are: inform, promote, support, share, and of course listen.

NEW BEDFORD — Tears welled up in Angela Sampaio’s eyes as she beheld the Lund’s Corner Jesus through her car windshield Wednesday, reports today’s Standard-Times.

"I am really, really, really moved by this," she said. And she wanted reassurance that the photographs of this Jesus are on the Internet. "This will be seen all over the world," she said.

She had plenty of company there in the parking lot of Premier Video, where the slightly larger-than-life depiction of the Saviour appeared on the wall sometime last weekend. In a one-hour span around noon Wednesday, at least 35 people walked or drove to the lot just to see the figure that is pasted to the white brick.

They came from miles around. They were young and old, sometimes three generations of a family in a car. There were blue-collar workers with their buddies, retirees, teenagers. They brought cameras and took pictures of each other near the figure of Christ. Some brought flowers, real and artificial, and some brought candles that flickered in their jars in the spring breeze.

(Note: Our friend tells us - "best pizza in that area is in that building, so if anyone wants to see the miracle, stop by and get a Ray's pie!")

This past weekend, the Sour Grapes Crew went to The University of North Texas for a special graffiti event. We were invited to paint a temporary wall that the university had built just for us. It was a perfect day for painting in a chill campus environment surrounded by cool people. We had a great time doing this event in conjunction with the "Graff, Tag and Bomb: The Influence of Graffiti" exhibition, which includes some of Dallas dope graffiti artist. Make sure to check out the art show and wall at UNT. This exhibition will run until march 28, 2009.

ArtsGoggle - March 27th

ArtsGoggle is the Near Southside's signature art and music event. Dozens of businesses are transformed into art galleries for the night, hosting artists and musicians from the neighborhood and throughout the region.

The event continues to grow in popularity and is drawing large crowds to the Near Southside every spring and fall on the Friday night before the west side's Saturday Gallery Night.

One of the coolest shake-ups President Obama wants to bring into office is his plan to expand the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and revitalize the arts.

His three top priorities are 1) Expanding public/private partnerships between schools and arts organizations. 2) Creating an Artist Corps. 3) Publicly championing the importance of arts education.

This has brought high-profile artist Quincy Jones to the suggestion to President Obama for the creation of a Secretary of Arts. He has started an online petition to create the Department of the Arts, because he says that the arts bring spiritual benefits. This could bring the arts and the government under one umbrella. But some argue that the arts should not be connected to the government. The opposition argues that the government should just fund the art, “then go away.”

Richard Kessler, executive director of The Center for Arts Education of New York city thinks is a great idea though. He said, “The mere existence of a cultural policy platform is an amazing thing, a good thing. Nothing like it existed before in the history of our country.”

As we know, artist help define society. I believe that more knowledge to young students about the arts is a great thing to care for. But do we want the government to oversee the arts? Perhaps this idea of a Secretary of the Arts can bring a direct representation to the White House about the lack of funds for arts like scholarships, art centers, and public art. If your country would needed you to paint, would you paint? As an artist, I would love to have government support, but as long as there is no regulation between what I want to paint and what the government thinks I should paint.

The Visual Artists of Cedar Hill (VACH) are having their 2nd Annual Regional Judged Art Exhibit April 16-19, 2009. The show is open to all artists age 18 and over. Membership in VACH is not required for entry in the show. Over $2,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded! Judge for the show will be Dawna Hamm Walsh who has had an extensive career as an art educator and is an experienced art juror. Dr. Walsh currently serves as the chairperson of Dallas Baptist University's Art Department.
Up to 3 entries per artist are allowed in a combination of any of the following categories:

R.I.P. Andrew Newell Wyeth (July 12, 1917 – January 16, 2009)

Andrew Newell Wyeth was a visual artist, primarily a realist painter, working predominantly in a regionalist style. He was one of the best-known U.S. artists of the middle 20th century, and was sometimes referred to as the "Painter of the People", due to his work's popularity with the American public. On January 16, 2009, Andrew Wyeth died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, after a brief illness. He was 91 years old. The cause of death is not known. What is Art?

"The Art Instinct," it argues that the instinct to create art is part of the mating process. That is, we create art to impress potential mates. Now this fascinates me, because for a couple years now I've thought that the impulse to create work that garners critical praise and popularity is a means to get sex and love. "Do you like my painting/acting/writing/music? Wanna do it?" I can't even see myself being in a relationship with someone unless they liked my art.

Do you create art with conscious thought about attracting mates?

Jonah Lehrer reviewed Denis Dutton's new book over the philosophy of art. He writes that this book goes over different expline over the meaning of art and exploring the art instict. Overall it sounds like a good reading for philisophical value or if you're an art major. Pick up a copy.

"Dutton is an elegant writer, and his book should be admired for its attempt to close the gap between art and science. It really is time that art critics learn about the visual cortex, musicologists study the inner ear and evolutionary psychologists unpack Jane Austen. Unfortunately, like so many other aesthetic theories, Dutton's ideas are ultimately undone by what they can't explain. This is the irony of evolutionary aesthetics: Although it sets out to solve the mystery of art, to explain why people write poems and smear paint on canvases, it ends up affirming the mystery. The most exquisite stuff is what we can't explain. That's why we call it art."

Paul "Moose" Curtis is not an average graffiti artist. His innovated technique of spraying off dirt from walls to create "clean" designs has taken street art into a environmental level. I wonder if the city does "clean" this graffiti, and if so, wouldn't they be cleaning the dirt that they normally would not. Simply enough, this is incredible.

Street Art Locator is a website designed for users to locate graffiti, sticker, stencil, and all other sorts of street art using google maps. Dirty Hands: The Art of David Choe

"The documentary is based on the titled subject, David Choe, a young near-schizophrenic American street artist who executes any and every idea that pops into his delinquent imagination. The film begins in the year 2000, when director Harry Kim decided to document Choe upon his dropping out of art school in order to pursue his creative dreams without abandon.

Choe devises numerous criminal schemes that afford him to hitchhike across the globe via trains, planes and automobiles. By skirting the legal constraints of society, he is allowed to "freely" create his art. Eventually, his nonchalant law-breaking style lands him in serious trouble. After a series of arrests, he finds himself in solitary confinement in a Tokyo prison, totally broken down and uncharacteristically still. During these dark times, he finds himself reflecting on his own selfish history, one riddled with heartache caused to his friends, family and his long-term girlfriend. Upon release from prison, a radically religious Choe, returns home with the hope that he can overcome his criminal temptations and repair the damage caused to loved ones.

We see Choe's unwillingness to grow up, his struggle to make it as an artist and his fight to hold on to his sanity. Faced with an ever-growing appetite for destruction, Choe realizes that in the end he must make sense of the chaos that echoes in his head, face his demons and learn how to harness them for the good of his life and burgeoning art career.

Director Harry Kim fully captures the complexity of Choe through a collage work of archived home video from Choe's childhood, still photographs, intimate artwork, animation and eight years of footage shot while on the road with the artist."

It's not easy working 40 hours, taking summer classes, paint, work on projects, write this blog, and have a life. It feels like perhaps nothing big has been done to promote the existence of this blog, so I've taking the liberty to try to come up with some new ways of expanding the information that is provided in this outlet. I've had some ideas on how to improve the blog as a form of not only promoting events and artists, but also to incorporate a window that lets you see through the incredible art/graffiti/hip hop scene in Dallas. This great community composed of artist, graffiti writers, photographers, bboys, and a whole bunch of galleries, have been doing a great job at keeping the family close and showing the metroplex the kinds of talents that it has. Not only showcasing, but also contributing back to the community in some way too.

So with all of that in mind, I've been meeting with certain individuals who in someway will be contributing to this blog and help expand knowledge not just inside the scene but also expand common universal knowledge. Some of these new materials will take their time to be produced and exposed, but with hope and hard work this blog will be more than just my in-between-time-wasting hobby. Also, if you are a common reader of this blog I really encourage you to send some feedback to me on whether you like what is posted or not and if you have any suggestions about the content being posted. There's many bloggers in this Dallas scene that are doing a great job at contributing to the source, but I'm pretty sure there's more thing bloggers can do to communicate some type of general calling of ideas and present bigger opportunities to a massive artistic influence on this city.

When I heard that Sole Power got second at jam in Houston I was stoked! but hearing that they were going to drive back to Dallas the same day, get home at 4am, then entering Old to The New jam? I could only hope that those guys at least showered. So on I went to the jam not knowing battles wouldn't start until 7:30, but there sure was enough bboys warming up before the battle.
They were holding down judging of black book battles. The catch though was...you bring your book and they judge it, which means you don't get down on the black book during the jam? Sour Grapes were killing time outside painting along with Minus. Yessir.

The final battle consisted of Sole Power vs. Three Man Army in a stand off that took the whole place by surprise. Both teams went out there and gave a true bboy exhibition by not holding anything back. Sole Power ended up killin' it and took 1st place and some cash. I gotta say that they have been progressing a lot, and keep an eye on them because they sure can rock the beat.

RECOVER Mural Series Pt. 2

If you haven't been in Deep Ellum this past week than you must not know what's been going on to the walls of some of the businesses in the area. Let me fill you in. The Deep Ellum Association together with the Deep Ellum Foundation are sponsoring a series of mural contest for many purposes, but mainly to bring back some of that colour Deep Ellum lost by the lack of art murals that reflects its mix culture and some of its great musical history. Artist enter by submiting concepts murals that are surrounded with a strong message.

So for the past days the chosen artist did non-stop work on these murals which were judged for the chance to win cash prices. The winners were announced Saturday at The Prophet Bar. The finalists were announced last Friday, giving the artists one week to complete their murals. And the winners are: In first place, winning a grand prize of $1,000 is the team of Sergio Garcia, Luke Harnden and Mark Nelson with their mural at 2631 Commerce Street. Second place went to Tyson Summers winning $500 for his work of ar at 3003 Commerce Street and third place went to Brian Crawford for his Koi fish on the back side of The Door.

Congratualtions to the winning artist and everyone else who participated in this great project.

The Extra Super Sweet Installation Show

Regardless of the being entirely exhausted from being at Ritual Warfare, I still had to make a stop at F6 Gallery to see how the show was going along. Right at I got there I could feel the excitement amongst the crowd from all the great installations that were done. J3RSH and I, included in the line up of this show, got to share this space with incredible artist. The space was filled up with more than just artwork, these installations were like a picture-perfect scene that made the art come to life. Each artist, with their art pieces, created a different dimension that took you inside their heads.

Besides from the art, the Arlington Police Dept. made their appearance into the show. Their reason was not really specified, but that sure was a first in F6 history.

this months music review

You paint that shit gold. The prolific duo of Slug and Ant are at it again, with thier 6th studio album entitled when life gives you lemons, you paint that shit gold. An el-p that brings you tracks filled with lyrical storytelling ranging from fatherhood, pimp life, homelessness to addiction. Also Ants masterfull production of the albums that offers small tastes of blues, funk, and some eclectic synth sound.

An album that The Source gave 3 mics and a half, I believe deserved a bit more gratitude than that. A track that is a major highlight is Dreamer with lyrics such as She do for her self, she dont want your help/afraid of bieng alone/ but fear aint enough to knock her off that stone/ gonna make that home a home with or with out a man she can call her own. a story that talks about a mother with a dead beat dad.

My personal pick would have to be yesterday that will surely make you feel nostalgic after you hear it. In her music box will take you along the ride of lyrical passion as he tells his story of fatherhood and a little girls dreams. The waitress ;look lady im homeless im crazy/ im so hopeless im suicidal daily/ if you and i cant co exist lets fake it/cause i aint got the energy it takes for this relationship. A beauty of a track. All around its a very well constucted album from start to end, a great belated gift for your mother an upcoming gift for your father, or just keep it for yourself i greatly recommend it.

Packed Saturday

Best believe that May has been a busy month, semesters being over, getting this together for Ritual Warfare, and not to mention intense hours working on stuff for F6. But all of this is done by the drive of the love I have for what I do. As this week continues, I will try to keep on posting stuff for you to chew on. There'll be a guest blogger coming in to fill in some space with good tunes reviews and such, so make sure to check that out.

I still haven't posted anything about the galleries I went to last weekend, excuse my slacking. I gotta say that the art scene in Dallas is getting better and better. More people with new ideas and techniques that are truly amazing. I'm gonna take this time to announce that free booze at galleries are a great compliment too.

Electric Windows

Starting this Friday 24 artist from around the world will meet in Beacon, NY to start a three-day street art project that will be displayed for a whole year. The purpose of this installation is to bring a challenging connection between indoor and outdoor mainly because street art is rarely done inside a rectangular area, but it should be an interesting outcome. I'll keep updating about this project as more info comes along.

Sankofa Arts Kafe - Cajun Soul Cuisine and Entertainment - has re-opened (near the old Galaxy Club space). They serve Cajun, Creole, with salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, pastas and seafood entrees. Sankofa’s previous incarnation was on MLK with the likes of Erykah Badu, Outkast, Angie Stone and Common performing.

Semester is Almost Over

As the spring semester is on its way out the back door, I've been stressing over my Trig exam tomorrow. Not only that, my Art 1301 final project took must of my time this past week. Anyways...my group presented our project this evening at the studio in Mountain View and I have to say that the professor was somewhat speechless. The art piece is untitled but it sure executed its purpose by drawing out such feelings from the audience. I hope this gives me that A+. Judge yourself.

The bad news were knowing that all the stuff on the walls would have to be covered up, so I went on to take flics of them. Since I came into the states, I caught into skateboarding. It happened really fast; it started pushing me into networking with other cats that were doing it too. I remember practicing my heelflips on the carpet of my room and taking them to the street for an intense game of S.K.A.T.E. to flippin' down 4 stairs at the high school next day. At first I thought skateboarding would get me from place A to B within 5 miles from home, but I was wrong when I got my car and started driving to point A to point B to skate that spot. There are times that skateboarding, the culture that surrounds it, and the influence, which still to this date, have been blessings in my life. For all of you who remember Roof Top, Bingo banks, F Bank, Jackson 5, Domino's ledges, Jiffy Lube, and 'til this day will pick up a board and rock the smooth asfault or bust a kickflip. Much respect!

Deathbowl to Downtown, a movie made by NCP Film, is a documentary about the history of skateboarding in New York City. With promises to be an unprecedented film, the documentary not only explore the culture of street skating, but also provides an anthropological overview of skating's shift from the 70's to modern day. It also digs into broader issues such as how urban planning changes the environment of skaters and how skateboarders went from being ignored to being loved. With never-before-seen footage and interviews ranging from old school skaters to current innovators, Deathbowl to Downtown is definitely a film worth watching.

His website, www.streetartlocator.com, let's people upload pictures and locate in the map where the art was spotted. You can search the world for anything from graffiti to stickers. So if you happen to take a picture of any street art you come across around the DFW...you know where it can go for the whole world to see!

East vs West

Adidas designed a project to celebrate the iconic Superstar. This project involved artist from both East and West coast and a pair of giant, SUV-size exact replicas, down to the fire-hose shoelaces! Artists' collective included Surface2Air (NY) featuring Gordon Hull, Daniel Jackson and Alexia Stamatiou, and Upper Playground (SF) featuring Sam Flores. At the end of the three day project both shoes were transported to Venice Beach, CA for a showdown! A short film about the act was made to document both parties' experiences and different styles.
